In Abraham Lincoln’s first inaugural address, delivered Monday, March 4, 1861 as part of his taking the oath of office for his first term as the sixteenth President of the United States, he said this:

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. We get so used to stress, even the extra stress of this year, that we frequently don’t recognize when it’s stronger than usual. It’s the “Frog in Boiling Water Syndrome”. Place a frog in boiling water and he’ll jump right out. Place a frog in cool water and slowly boil it and he gets used to the rising temperature until it’s too late. With all the dismal news and feelings of chaos and hopelessness out there, in spite of anticipation of the holiday season, perhaps it would be helpful to take a look at where we are in the bigger scheme of things.

For people who don’t know what’s going on in the bigger picture, when I explain about the Piscean Age/Aquarian Age transition, they’re always surprised that the outlook is far more hopeful than they could have imagined. For people who are aware what’s going on – that we’re headed into more harmony, communication, equality and awareness – watching it slowly inch forward day-to-day can make anyone believe we’re never going to get there.
